BABY BOOM ALERT: Creator of 1970s Phenom “Pet Rock” Dies
Gary Dahl, who created one of the most incredible sales juggernauts of the 1970s, has died.
His product was the Pet Rock. That's it, just a rock. As a joke he marketed it as "the perfect pet. No walking, no bathing, no feeding, no vet bills, simple." He gussied it up with its own box/cage and marketed it in magazines and late night television shows. His pet rocks were simply grey stones he bought at a lumber and building supply store.
Within one year he sold 1.5 million Pet Rocks and became a millionaire. He was 78 at the time of his death.
