I saw this sentence floating around the internet today:  "Why does the school day end before the work day ends?"

Curious.

Back in my day, most mothers did not work and were home at 2:30, 3:00 or 3:30 when kids got home from school.  My mom, however, did work.  She was at our family grocery store downtown in Sidney as 3,4,5,6,7, and 8 kids came piling through the back door after school.

Is that what they call a latchkey kid?

We simply came into the house, grabbed us a glass of milk and some Oreos and sat in front of the TV for a bit.  Or went out in the backyard to play.  Mom would always come home by 4:30.  No harm done.

I know other kids went home to grandparents, or neighbors or babysitters or the farm.  But, again, we are talking the 1950s and 1960s, so most moms were home all day.

So, does it make any sense to arrange the school day so it gets out at the end of a traditional work day?  Like 3:30 when a shift usually changes or even 5:00?  Start the day later.  I don't know.

It just struck me as curious to read that sentence:  "Why does the school day end before the work day."

Gee, I never thought of that before.
