The Broome County Sheriff’s Office effectively deployed the drug Naloxone Thursday, subsequently saving the life of a woman who had overdosed on heroin.

The Sheriff’s Office received an emergency call for a 59-year-old Town of Windsor woman who was unresponsive and barely breathing after using heroin.

Deputy Will Andres deployed his issued Naloxone as trained, and performed rescue breathing. Within a few minutes, the woman regained consciousness and was breathing unassisted. She was transported by ambulance to an area hospital for treatment.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office began carrying Naloxone, commonly referred to as Narcan, in February, 2014 after receiving training from the Broome County Office of Emergency Services. Naloxone is a drug used to counter the effects of an opioid overdose. Naloxone is specifically used to counteract life-threatening depression of the central nervous and respiratory systems.
