Chobani Moving Sales Headquarters to North Carolina

Chobani announced this week that they will be locating their North American sales headquarters to Charlotte, NC. The offices will span 5,200 square feet on the 16th floor of the Charlotte plaza building.

Kyle O’Brian, executive vice president of Chobani Holdings Inc, said the headquarters will be a good fit for Chobani with an amazing networking opportunity and culture. Chobani is America’s No. 1 yogurt brand with its primary production facility in New Berlin and Norwich.

NYS Says Schools Will Remain Within 2 Percent Cap

Records released yesterday by the state Department of Education show most school districts will remain within the state’s new 2 percent cap on new property taxes.

The figures show 92 percent of districts will keep their proposed tax levy within the limit.

The governor and legislature put the cap into place last year, but a district can appeal to voters to raise the cap. Also, pension costs are not part of the limit, raising some district taxes by 3 percent.

The cap was made law last year after reports showed New York as a state with some of the highest property taxes in the nation.

School districts will hold budget votes on May 15.

Redistricting Dispute Reaches State Court of Appeals

The dispute over New York State’s 63rd senate district continues, this time in the state’s highest court.

Senate democrats have brought a constitutional challenge to the state court of appeals. They say republican senators on the redistricting committee used two different formulas to redraw the senate district maps for the upcoming election.

The court of appeals has moved the case up on the calendar.

The assembly democratic majority and the republican senate majority had a deal with the governor to approve the new maps.

The republicans hold a two-vote majority in the senate, and critics say they engineered a 63rd district in a mostly-republican section of the Hudson Valley to help themselves keep the majority. A lower court decided the new district was constitutional, but the methods were disturbing.

Senate republicans say they worked within the law in adding the district.

Standardized Math Test Has Critical Problems

There’s a problem with New York State’s standardized math test that students are taking this week.

Officials with the education department say one question on the fourth-grade test has two correct answers, and an eighth-grade test question has no correct answer listed.

Last week the state removed a question about a talking pineapple in its eighth-grade English test.

New York’s third-through-eighth graders are taking three days of math tests this week. They endured three days of English tests last week.

Norwich, Oneonta, South Otselic and Smithville Participate in Prescription Drug Take Back Day

The Norwich Police Department is taking part in the national prescription take back day tomorrow at the rear of the Norwich Police Department on East Main Street.

From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., anyone can drop of drugs of any kind for disposal by the DEA. The drop off is completely anonymous. Other drop-off sites are the Chenango County Sheriff’s substation in South Otselic, the Smithville Town Hall, and in Oneonta at the SUNY Police Department and the Oneonta Police Department

New Yorkers Breathing Healthier Air

The American Lung Association reports NYS residents enjoyed better air quality this year.

There are still about 3.2 million New Yorkers living in counties where there is unhealthy air.

The report is called “the State of the Air 2012” and it shows six of New York’s counties get failing grades.

The Federal Environmental Protection Agency and the state Department of Environmental Conservation will have a new plan to conduct air quality testing across the state in partnership with community groups.

Weather Service and NYC Team to Monitor Water Flow

The NYC Environmental Protection Agency and the National Weather Service have a new agreement. They will work together to speed up the development of a system to forecast water flow predictions in the streams that supply the Catskill watershed.

The DEP will give the weather service a $1 million grant to develop state-of-the art forecasts that will help the DEP predict how much water will end up in its reservoirs as well as monitor predicted water quality.

The system will give the DEP real-time stream conditions, and allow for a release of reservoir water in advance of wet weather.

The DEP manages NYC’s water supply, providing more than 1 billion gallons of water each day.

At Milford yesterday Milford boys and girls ran to team victories over Richfield Springs, Stamford and Andes.

At Greene, Sidney boys topped Unatego, Greene, Delhi and Oxford while for the girls it was Greene in first, followed by Delhi, Sidney, Unatego and Oxford.

At Cooperstown, the Cooperstown boys ran by Sauquoit Valley, and Owen D. Young while for the girls, it was Sauquoit Valley, Cooperstown and the Owen D. Young.

At Catskill yesterday, both the Catskill boys and girls teams placed first over Windham.
