Early Saturday morning, since it was so beautiful out, I decided it was a good morning for kayaking.  I made my way to Portlandville and put in there to just paddle around a nice cove up river.

I was expecting a nice, quiet, calm cruise around the cove and what I got was quite the opposite.  I was just paddling along and when I rounded a bend in the river that opens up into the cove, I was greeting by large splashes in the water everywhere!  What the heck?!  I found out what those giant splashes were being caused by...spawning carp!  Geez they were big, averaging at what I thought looked like 18 inches!  I thought they were going to knock me right out of my kayak, they were jumping so aggressively!  I must admit that it rather freaked me out and I quickly sought out calmer waters nearby, at what I considered a "safe" distance.

Below is a video of spawning carp.  The amount of carp I saw wasn't as thick as this video depicts, but I can say that there were quite a few fish, though they were spread out in different areas of the cove.
