Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation yesterday to prohibit phone calls that deliver pre-recorded messages.

Residents must now give consent if they choose to accept these harassing calls. Telemarketers will also have to provide call recipients with an option to put their number on a do-not-call list.

With the new bill, all telemarketers doing business in New York State are required to register with the Department of State. Violation of the law could result in revoked or suspended licenses for companies. The law goes into effect in 90 days.
