Oxford Historical Society Presents “The Music and Songs of WWI” by Ernie Spicer

On Tuesday, September 30, at 7 p.m., the Oxford Historical Society (OHS) is presenting a special program by Ernie Spicer, “The Music and Songs of WWI,” in the Community Room at Oxford’s Memorial Library.

Ernie has an extensive collection of early phonograph recordings, Edison Cylinders and “platters.”  He will present a selection of original editions of the songs of WWI; songs that have lasted a hundred years.  These early songs truly take us back to the days when we sent our “doughboys” over to the trenches of WWI.  Ernie will play the recordings on a modern Garrard turntable with the best possible fidelity, and large modern speakers rather than the scratchy steel needles and tin megaphones of those early machines.

Printed lyrics for some of the songs will be available and the audience may be asked to sing along with a song or two.  Ernie is extremely knowledgeable about the music and singers of those days and his comments will enlighten and entertain the audience.

There will also be a display of WWI sheet music and photo books from the collection of Fred Lanfear.  The meeting is open and free to members and non-members. Refreshments will be served after the program and continued discussion will follow as music wafts in the background. The evening promises to pump up your patriotism!
