It wasn't all that long ago that public "payphones" were as common as finding a penny in a parking lot.  They were everywhere and only took change, so you had to travel around with a collection of coins "just in case".

My children reminded me of how dated I was by pointing to the remnants of a long out-of-service pay phone and asking, "What's that?".  Did it make me feel old?  You bet.  It makes me wonder what's next in the world of communication technology?  I can't tell you but I'm sure it won't be long before we can all make a phone call on our mobile device from anywhere on the planet.
