Cliche's, catch phrases, and highlights are mostly what sports journalism is these days, but there still are a few good writers who don't seem to be worried about making friends with the athletes.  In my opinion, one of those is Mike Lupica of the NY. Daily News.

Another, and one I didn't particularly care for when he first appeared on ESPN years ago, is Jeremy Schaap. He has been brutally honest with his coverage of the Penn State debacle, and refreshingly is not a Joe Paterno apologist.
