The annual inspection of the New York canal system begins tomorrow, starting out from the Erie Canal in Buffalo eastward across the state.

When the Erie Canal opened in 1825, it included the Chenango Canal, but as the Erie Canal grew, the feeder canals could not keep up and faded away. The annual canal system inspection began in 1825 when Governor Dewitt Clinton departed from Buffalo to mark the opening of the Erie Canal.
