We were joined in the Big Kat studio Monday by Jo Ann Kishbaugh, Director of Literacy Volunteers of Chenango County. She was here to, not only tell us a little bit about the organization, but also to let people know about their fundraising event this Saturday, June 14th. It's called "Scrabble For Literacy" and takes place from 1-4:30 at SUNY Morrisville's Norwich Campus on Conkey Avenue.

Teams or individuals will play Scrabble for prizes, with registration just 12 Dollars per person. Sign up by calling 334-7114 or go to their website for more information.

Literacy Volunteers is a non-profit organization of volunteers dedicated to providing services that enable people to achieve personal goals through literacy. They provide free, one-to-one confidential and learner centered to adults seeking help in basic literacy or English as a second language. They serve individuals aged 16 and older who read generally between a 2nd and 8th grade level.

Currently, they have 36 active students, 22 active tutors, and one part time instructor. They also conduct a 6 hour per week class called MP3, for 16-24 year old needing to complete their High School Equivalency, but perform too low on the Test of Adult Basic Education.

For more information or to volunteer call 334-7114. Also, listen to the entire interview with Jo Ann by clicking below.
