Macy’s and J.C. Penneys to Close Some Upstate New York Stores

Macy's says it will close 14 of its stores in the United States, including two in upstate New York, under plans to restructure its merchandising and marketing operations. The closure list includes the store in Rotterdam Square Mall in Schenectady and the one in ShoppingTown Mall in suburban Syracuse. The announcement comes a day after JCPenney said it will close about 40 stores, including the one at Hudson Valley Mall in the town of Ulster. Macy's says the restructuring is in response to changes in the way customers shop in stores and online. It says the store closings will result in annual savings of $140 million. It says its workforce of 175,000 will remain level as it lays off about 2,200 workers nationwide but picks up staffing in other areas.
