Chenango County says Chenango County sheriff deputies were justified in using deadly force in shooting a Norwich man in Pitcher last week.

Patrick W. Ford, 42, was hit by one shot to his upper torso, ending his attempts at shooting deputies and state police. He struck a sheriff’s and trooper’s vehicle before he was shot by police.

Witness Gary Standish said Ford became enraged after his pickup truck hit a mailbox and became tangled in a guide wire near the home of his son.

Ford’s son was a passenger in the vehicle and is now in the custody of his mother, according to Chenango County sheriff Ernest Cutting, Jr.

Ford was in the intensive care unit at Upstate Medical Center on Friday night and is expected to recover.
