The Voice Season 17 continued with another week of the blind auditions on Monday (Sept. 30)—allowing returning coaches Blake SheltonKelly Clarkson and John Legend, as well as returning alum Gwen Stefan, to take cracks at their initial team builds.

The night was a definite genre mix, but one of the first country artists was Jake Hoot. "I was born in Corpus Christi, Texas," he explained "My parents were missionaries, so I actually moved over to the Dominican Republic when I was roughly 9 years old. In the Dominican, you're a white guy and two feet taller than everybody else, and so you really stick out. I was always asked to grab stuff off top shelves, so it was really fun.

Hoot further explained that he was busy with church and church music programs while overseas. He moved back to the U.S. at 20 to attend college. "I met my ex-wife at Tennessee Tech, and we had a little girl back in 2015. Her name is Macy Lynn, and she's the greatest thing ever. Being a single dad with a sassy little 4-year-old is definitely very entertaining."

Hoot delivered a strong performance of Luke Combs' "When it Rains it Pours," which country fans might have thought would have Shelton swivel. However, it was just Clarkson who turned her chair. The coach held out her trademark enthusiasm, however: "I know you probably wanted Blake, but this is a better home I promise," Clarkson enthused. "You sound like Ronnie Dunn!" Not a bad comparison, nor a bad place for this contestant to land.

We'll be following along each week to keep up with the Season 17 competition, so be sure to check in weekly to check the progress of your favorites on the show.
