The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint from a resident saying they received unsolicited documentation from the New York State Department of Labor- Unemployment Insurance. It appears that unknown individuals with access to resident’s personally identifiable information and inappropriately and fraudulently applied electronically for unemployment benefit. If you are contacted about unemployment benefits that you did not apply for, DuMond says be aware of the possibility of identity theft and report it to local authorities. You can also file a complaint with the New York State Better Business Bureau.
