A 24-year old Schenevus resident is being hailed today as a hero for saving the family of a local law enforcement officer from a burning home.

Shawn Sperbeck was returning to his Schenevus home early Thursday morning when he noticed the home of the Bartlett family, on Race Street, ablaze.  The young man awakened the family and called the fire in to authorities.  Everyone got out safe due to the courageous actions of the young man.

The owners of the house, Jonathan and Beth Bartlett, lost everything.  Bartlett (photo below) is a longtime local law enforcement officer,.  A fundraising effort is underway to help out the family.  A link to help, at the website "gofundme", reads as follows:

Lieutenant Jon Bartlett is a police officer with the State University of New York at Oneonta Police Department.  On January 8, 2015, he, his wife and their children were victims of a severe house fire which resulted in a total loss.  Bartlett has been involved in law enforcement for more than 30 years, most recently serving as the Director of the Otsego County Law Enforcement Academy in Oneonta, NY.  He has dedicated his life to helping others and it's our turn to return the favor.  Every little bit will help.

The goal is to raise $50,000.  As of Thursday morning more than $8,000 has been raised.  If you would like to contribute CLICK HERE!
